They settled in St. Paul, Ramsey Co., Minn. where Nels became a stone contractor and builder. In 1895 and 1896 he was even a County Commissioner in Ramsey Co., Minn.

They were probably divorced, about 1897. Maryanna appears to have moved with their three surviving children to Iowa, Nels was still living in St. Paul, Minn. in 1900.
The three children who survived infancy were: * Mollie Ness, born in Minnesota about 1879 * Nellie Jonilla Marie Ness, born in St. Paul, Minn. Mar. 14, 1888 * Nels Johan Ness (Jr.), born in St. Paul, Minn. Dec. 21, 1889

The family attended Christ Lutheran church in St. Paul, Minn., and several infant children of theirs are buried in the Oakland cemetery in St. Paul, Minn.
