Helle (Narvesdatter Bendiksby) Ness (1809 - 1891)

Helle Narvesdatter was born Oct. 7, 1809 on Bendixby farm, Modum, Buskerud County, Norway. She died on Aug. 13, 1891 in Gilman, Pierce County, Wisconsin, USA. She was daughter of Narve Christophersen Bendiksby and Berthe Halstensdatter. Helle married Christen Christensen Nes on July 22, 1832(#31) in Nykirke church, Modum, Buskerud County, Norway. They had 9 children:

1. Anne Christensdatter, b. Apr. 24, 1833(#28),
2. Narve Christensen, b. Sep. 6, 1835(#61), d. June 11, 1881(#51), m.(1) July 4, 1858(#21), Nicoline Ingebretsdatter, m.(2) Aug. 1, 1869(#18), Marie Elensdatter.
3. Christen Christensen, b. May 1, 1838(#32), m. Sep. 22, 1865(#16), Rise Nilsdatter.
4. Birthe (Berte) Christensdatter, b. Oct. 26, 1840(#75), d. Apr. 14, 1917(#7), m. Dec. 27, 1858(#31), widower Fingal Halvorsen Kvisle.
5. Christopher Christensen, b. Oct. 29, 1843(#89), d. Aug. 17, 1867(#28).
6. Maren Christensdatter, b. Apr. 13, 1846(#34), d. Oct. 24, 1847(#35).
7. Hans Christensen, b. Oct. 11, 1848(#81), d. May 11, 1929 in Spring Valley, Pierce County, Wisconsin, m. Mar. 11, 1877, Martha Nicoline (Lina) Jacobsen, (Prairie Farm, Wisconsin). Gravestone.
8. Maren Christensdatter, b. Mar. 16, 1851(#31),
9. Helene Christensdatter, b. Jan. 22, 1854(#16), d. Nov. 27, 1926 in Pierce County, Wisconsin, m. John Tollofson. Gravestone. emigration June 23, 1871. See also below.

All the children were baptized in Sigdal, Buskerud County Norway except from #9 Helene who was baptized in Modum.

Helle was baptized on Oct. 15, 1809 in Nykirke church, Modum, Buskerud County, Norway.

Her son Narve moved from Sigdal to Drammen on May 18, 1858(#68).

Christen, his wife Helle and their children Anne, Christen, Berthe, Hans and Maren moved from Sigdal to Sande in Vestfold County, Norway on Sep. 2, 1858(See #75-81).


In the 1865 census(see #6-12), Helle was living on western Kvisle farm in Sande, Vestfold County, Norway. She was living together with her husband and their children Narve, Christopher and Helene. Narve's two daughters was also living with them. Narve's son Hartvig(#5) was living together with Narve's sister Birthe and her husband on the same farm.


In the 1865 census(see #4 -5), his son Christen was living with his wife Rise on Skar farm in Sande. His wife's name is misspelled. (#1 and 3 are Rise's brother's and #2 is Rise's father).

In the 1865 census(see #4), her son Hans was a servant on Sando farm in Sande.

Kristen Kristensen Quisle emigrated together with his wife and their daughter Helene on June 23, 1871 from Oslo with the ship S/S Hero 2. Their destination was Milwaukee, Wisconsin. See also emigration.

In the 1880 census(#50) she was living together with her son Hans C. Næss and his family. They were living in Gilman, Pierce, Wisconsin, United States. Her name was then written as Helle Næss.

Helle's Gravestone. She and her family used Ness as their surname in USA.
