Hans Messel Sem was born Aug.

6, 1857(# 83) in Espevær, Bømlo, Hordaland County,
Norway. He was son of merchant Henrich Sem and Welmiche Catharine
Mitzel. Hans married Christine
Sophie Weltzin on Dec.
3, 1806 in Bømlo. They had 5 children:

Hans' daughter Wilhelmine Cathrine was born in Bergen, the other
children were born on Børøy,
Moster, Bømlo, Hordaland County, Norway.
His daughter's Wilhelmine Cathrine and Berthe Lovise emigrated to
America. Berthe Lovise emigrated with 4 of her children on May 20,
1869 from Bergen, Norway and arrived in Quebec, Canada on July 13,
1869. They travelled with the bark Lyna.

Hans' christening was held on Aug.
17, 1780(# 36) in Korskirken in Bergen. His name was then written
as Hans Midzel Sem.
In the 1801
census, Hans was living in Bergen, Hordaland County, together with
his father and siblings. He was then a sailor.
Hans and his family
moved to Børøy
in Moster, Bømlo, Hordaland County, Norway, abt. 1808. He
lived on Børøy until 1848 when he moved to Espevær.
In the 1815
census Hans Messel Sem was living on Børøy farm, Moster,
Bømlo, Hordaland County, Norway, together with his wife and
their children.
Hans' burial was held on Sep.
13, 1857(# 83) in Bømlo. 1)
