Sophie Madsdatter Hystad (1831 - 1907)

Sophie Madsdatter was born May 9, 1831(#45) on Hystad farm, Stord, Hordaland County, Norway. Sophie Thompson died in 1907 in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was daughter of Mads Nelsen Hystad and Sophia Paust Knudsdatter. Sophie married(1) Knut Helgesen Rommetveit, Sep. 5, 1854(#26) in Stord church. Knut and Sophie had 1 child:


1. Nel Knutsen, b. Sep. 24, 1854(#126), m. Oct. 2, 1878(#12), Malene Reinertsdatter Leirvik, He emigrated July 5, 1888 to America.



Sophie married(2) Apr. 18, 1871(#5), Hans Olsen Braaten. They had 4 children:

1. Ingeborg Sophie Hansdatter, b. Apr. 12, 1870(#48), d. May 29, 1875(#26).
2. Knut Paust Hansen, b. Oct. 23, 1871(#58), to America.
3. Olava Marie Hansdatter, b. Nov. 8, 1873(#70), d. 1850, m. July 25, 1892, Anton Thorson. Find A Grave.
4. Ole Maselius Hansen, b. Jan. 22, 1876(#30), to America.


Sophie married(3) in 1891 her first cousin Andfin "Anfin" Thorson Thompson in Crow River Lutheran Church, Belgrade, Stearns, Minnesota, United States.


Hysingstad is the same as Hystad farm.

In the 1835 census "Mads Nielsen" was living on Hysingstad (Hystad farm) together with his wife and their children.

In the 1845 census "Mads Nælsen" was living on Hysingstad (Hystad farm) together with his wife and their children. They had 1 horse, 8 cow's, 30 sheep and 1 pig.

In the 1865 census Sofie Madsdatter was living on Skottebjerget in Stord together with her husband Knud Helgesen and their son Nel Knudsen.

In the 1875 census Sofie Madsdatter was living on Rossnes farm together with her husband Hans Olsen and their children.


Sofie Madsdatter Rommetveit received an emigration attest from Stord church for herself, 3 children and 2 grandchildren dated June 4, 1889. See # 15-20 on the right side. (Rommetveit was her son Nel's farm).

Sophie emigrated June 6, 1889 from Bergen, Norway together with 3 children and 2 grandchildren. They travelled with the White Star Line.

In the 1895 census "Anfin Thompson" is living in Colfax Township, Kandiyohi, Minnesota, United States together with his second wife Sophie and his son's Carl and Albert from his first marriage. Anfin was a farmer. (His son Anton Thorson married to Sophie's daughter are also on the same page). Sophie's grandchildren are also living with them.

News has been received here of
the death of Mrs. Sophie Thompson,
formerly a resident of this town
but late of Estevan, Canada. The
cause of death was paralysis.
